‘Whoa – slow down!’ Abi cried as Bryony burst into the Seaview Stables tack room with her brother and all of her friends.

She had fallen asleep on the phone book late last night around the Boggis-Wilsons, Emma having dozed off on the Bensons much earlier.

Today, though, having no further leads on the man with the pocket watch wasn’t Bryony’s main concern. She’d woken early with the gymkhana at the front of her mind, telling Emma and Josh she was going to ask Abi if she could – somehow – get her back in the gymkhana. Josh had felt Abi was more likely to reconsider if Bryony took ‘backup’ with her, so he’d shot off on his bike to round up the rest of the gang.

Bryony plonked down a huge tangle of bunting, carefully folded by her mum late last night and now totally messed up by the breezy sprint over.

‘But, Abi!’ puffed Bryony, very out of breath. ‘Please can I ride Red in the gymkhana tomorrow? I know I sometimes act all grown up like everything’s totally fine – but actually I’ve been waiting my entire life to have a pony of my own. And Red really is the most perfect pony that I could ever hope to have – and . . .’

As Bryony paused to draw breath, Abi raised a hand. Bryony glanced at the others, who all looked as determined as she did . . .

Josh was on the end, with his Team Coach cap on and his clipboard and stopwatch ready for practice. Next to him was Alice, rosy-cheeked and usually smiley – though she appeared much more serious today. Then there was Finn, with a Pony Club Gymkhana rule book under his arm (which he probably knew every word of!). Tapping her foot next to Finn was straight-talking Hari, who, Bryony saw, was glaring at Abi with a face like thunder. Finally, there was quiet, gentle Emma with her arm around Bryony’s shoulder. Bryony felt so lucky to have such great friends.

‘Okay, guys,’ Abi said. ‘There’s no need to go on. I’ve already made up my mind. I had Bryony’s other fan club here earlier too.’

Bryony looked puzzled. ‘My other fan club?’ she asked, and Abi went on to explain.

‘First your grandpa,’ said Abi. ‘Then your friend, Lavender. They both came offering to help me type up a new programme, and even deliver them to the stables in Cockledore and Nettleton, if I can find Sara a different pony so that you can have Red.’

Bryony blushed, suddenly feeling all this fuss on her behalf made her sound a little bit spoiled. And spoiled was the last thing she ever wanted to be.

‘S-sorry,’ mumbled Bryony quietly, looking down at her feet awkwardly.

‘No, don’t be,’ Abi replied. ‘Bryony, listen, your grandpa and Lavender are both right. And you were right to come here and speak up too. It was actually very brave of you, and kind of all your friends too. The fact is, you do deserve to ride Red on Saturday after all the hard work you, and he, have put in since the summer.
